Appropriate gear for a backcountry hike (see pack list tab for more information).Appropriate clothing that will keep you warm during your stay.An appropriately rated sleeping bag and pillow for your bunks.Is co-ed and may be shared by multiple people from different reservations.Is unheated and has no electricity/overhead lighting, each bunk has a small reading light.Three wool blankets and 1 pillow with a pillowcase are provided on every bunk during the full-service season, however, bringing an extra pillowcase and sleeping bag is still recommended.We strongly recommend you make reservations in advance. Overnight guests can stay in our bunkrooms, which have a total capacity of 90 people and include individual rooms that accommodate 6, 8, 12, or 15 people. Measuring about 59,020 acres (238.8 km2), the refuge hosts a great diversity of species: 806 plant species, 240 species of birds, 36 fish, and 64 reptiles and amphibians are present.Located just below Mount Monroe, reach Lakes of the Clouds Hut by journeying 3 miles from the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trailhead along the strenuous Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. The Wichita Mountains are approximately 500 million years old. The refuge's location in the geologically unique Wichita Mountains and its areas of undisturbed mixed grass prairie make it an important conservation area. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, located in southwestern Oklahoma near Lawton, has protected unique wildlife habitats since 1901 and is the oldest managed wildlife facility in the United States Fish and Wildlife Service system. ![]() More than 50 mammal species, 240 bird species, 64 reptile and amphibian species, 36 fish species, and 806 plant species thrive at this refuge. Bison, elk, deer, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, prairie dogs, turkey, bunch grasses, post oak and blackjack oaks - these are just a few. The refuge provides habitat for large native grazing animals and Texas Longhorn cattle. This refuge is an island where the natural carpet of grass escaped destruction because the rocks underfoot defeated the plow. The 59,020-acre Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge hosts a rare piece of the past - a remnant mixed grass prairie. ![]()
